Christmas Reflections

This week I want to take some time away from the hustle and bustle to devote myself to reflection. As Christmas approaches, I find it so easy to be swept away with the endless to do lists, the parties, the gifts, and the glitter. I find myself longing for silence, solitude, and a slowness that is counterintuitive to the season.

I would like to share with you a quote Ann Voskamp recently shared on her Instagram that I found summed up my thoughts perfectly: “I will not let myself be overwhelmed with the season, but be overwhelmed with the goodness of God so I can overflow with the goodness of God to others.” It’s easy to lose sight of how good God really is. So today, I would like to step away from the noise for a moment and focus on that very idea.

2 Corinthians 8:9 “For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sakes He became poor, that you through His poverty might become rich.”

I want to remember how the Creator of the Universe chose to live a human life. How He chose to be born among animals. To spend His first years in Egypt (a foreign country away from family). To grow up poor. To work with his hands. To sing. To cry. To care and love. I want to remember how He hung naked before His friends and enemies in death. How He was forsaken by the only One who understood Him fully. I want to remember the immeasurable price for sin that I couldn’t pay without Him.

He left the splendor of Heaven

Knowing His destiny

Was the lonely hill of Golgotha

There to lay down his life for me.

If that Isn’t Love

The ocean is dry

There’s no stars in the sky

And the sparrow can’t fly

If that isn’t love

Then Heavens a myth

There’s no feeling like this

If that isn’t love – Dottie Rambo

Christmas is when we remember Christ’s birth. But it’s also a time to reflect on Christ’s gift of self-sacrificing love. And when I realize just how much I am loved and how much I’ve been given, I can give of myself to others. And that, my friend, is what Christmas is really all about.

I wish you and your loved ones the very merriest Christmas!
